Week Two: Map

Session One: Conventions

Plan, Section, Elevation and Perspective are the fundamental ways of drawing a spatial design

Plan

  • Top down view looking inside the design
  • Uses simplified/abstract shapes to represent the subject in simplest form
  • Dark and light line quality represents permanent/in-permanent structures
  • Darker lines for things closer to viewing plane
  • Contour lines tell us how steep things are eg. hill, stairs

Section
  • Side view
  • Darker lines for things closer to viewing plane
  • A 'section perspective' combines both to show depth, layers, atmosphere, context

Elevation
  • Exterior design as seen from straight on
  • Elevations are like sections, with no cutting planes
